Redesigning the Nexus Clips AI video editor

Transforming automated editing into 4.2x user growth in 6 months

Lead Designer

May - July 2024

Overview

Nexus Clips is an AI-powered tool that automatically generates short-form videos from long content like podcasts and streams. While users loved the automation, many felt frustrated by the lack of creative control. Our NPS data revealed that customization limitations were a key pain point, with users mentioning that the system felt too rigid and unintuitive. Our goal was to strike the right balance—giving users more control without making editing overwhelming.

Key Results

420%

Increase in 6 months

The redesigned editor, with improved customization and a more professional look, made the tool more appealing.

This also attracted more ambassadors and creators, increasing organic reach.

233%

Growth in 6 months

The overall growth in user adoption and engagement contributed to higher premium conversions.

More creators recognized the value of the platfom's enhanced capabilities.

475%

Growth in 6 months

Giving users more control over their clips led to increased usage, with creators downloading and sharing more clips.

The improved UI resulted in longer, more productive editing sessions.

My Contributions

As the sole designer on this project, I was responsible fro the entire redesign process, form initial research and ideation through final implementarion. I worked closely with engineering and product manager to balance design vision with technical feasibility and business goals.

Implementation

UX Research & ProblemDefiniton

I personally conducted:

  • Analyzed NPS feedback from 200+ users

  • Conducted competitive analysis of editing features across 4 video editing platforms

  • User interviews with 10+ content creators

  • Identified core pain points in AI editing workflow

UI Design & Design System

My key design deliverables:

  • Full UI redesign of editor interface

  • Created modular component system

  • Designed word-level editing feature

  • Developed dark/light mode specifications

  • Built interactive prototypes for testing

Testing & Iteration

I led the testing process:

  • Facilitated 8 rounds of usability tests

  • Iterated timeline & editing controls based on direct user feedback

  • Prioritized features for MVP launch

Cross-functional Collaboration

My role in the broader team:

  • Presented competitor research findings and aligned feature roadmap with PM and CEO

  • Collaborated in technical feasibility planning

  • Created specs and documentation for engineering

  • Advocated for user needs in product desicions

  • Presented design solutions to stakeholders

Problems

Through feedback from influencer ambassadors and post-export NPS surveys, we uncovered critical usability gaps in our editing experience. Users consistently reported:

Portfolio 1.png
Frustration with limited customization
Users wanted more control over subtitles, branding, and clip framing but found the old system too rigid.
Lack of confidence in the tool due to its outdated interface
Users felt the previous layout wasn’t intuitive, making editing harder than expected.
Difficulties in adjusting AI-generated clips to fit their personal style
Users liked the AI automation but wanted more control over key moments and visual elements.

Opportunity

How might we give creators more control over AI-generated clips without slowing down their workflow?

Goals

We transformed our key problems into design opportunities that made editing faster, more customizable, and more user-friendly.

Smart Cutomization
  • More control over text styles, subtitles, and branding

  • Style presets for fast, consistent customization

  • Editable AI-generated clips for better personalization

Intuitive & scalable
  • Redesigned interface with a cleaner, modern look

  • Standardized editing components for a smooth workflow

  • Real-time previews for faster decision-making

Faster editing & Exporting
  • Streamlined clip generation to export in fewer steps

  • Clearer, more accessible editing options

  • AI-assisted editing with manual override for speed + control

We kept our core strength—AI-powered clip generation—but refined the experience to empower creators with just enough customization for confidence in their content.

Design system evolution

To ensure that our customization features were intuitive and scalable, we expanded our design system to standardize key editing components—allowing users to edit without friction. Built upon Chakra UI, we developed a flexible system that supported both light and dark modes, optimizing accessibility and usability. Our component library grew to include specialized editing tools, like clip previews, timeline interactions, and preset styles, ensuring a seamless and customizable editing experience.

Iterations

We refined key aspects of the editor through continuous iteration, balancing user feedback with technical feasibility. Two major design decisions shaped the final experience:

Timeline functionality & Zoom Controls
Original Plan: The timeline was designed as a simple player, allowing users only to preview clips.
timeline1_edited.jpg
Initial timeline design functioned only as a player, allowing users to preview but not interact with specific elements
Iteration: Users needed more control over clip adjustments, especially for defining hooks, subtitles, and sticker durations.
Final Decision: I introduced added draggable labels & timeline zoom controls.
Property 1=No scroll.png
Updated timeline with draggable labels for precise hook, subtitle, and sticker duration selection, plus zoom controls for better navigation and accuracy.
Subtitle Editing (Phrase vs. Word-by-Word)
Original Plan: Preferred phrase-level editing for speed.
Early wireframe for phrase-level subtitle editing, designed for bulk edits but later refined for better precision and flexibility.
Iteration: Word-level editing was more feasible for launch.
Final Decision: Moved editing to a text panel with precise word controls while keeping the UI scalable for future updates.
Word-level subtitle editing, allowing users to modify, add, or delete individual words for precise caption adjustments.
